What AI staff augmentation means at HorizonLux
By the HorizonLux engineering team · reviewed by Seif Sgayer, Founder · updated 30 Sep 2026
AI staff augmentation at HorizonLux puts a senior engineer from our own team on your backlog, so CTOs and founders ship AI features without waiting on a hire. HorizonLux employs the engineer. Your lead directs the work. They take tickets from your board, join your stand-ups and open pull requests your team reviews.
It starts with a free 30-minute call with Seif Sgayer, our founder. If there is a fit, the engineer joins your Slack and repo within five working days of the call and stays on your backlog for the length you agree. Price, billing and notice are agreed on the call.
Buyers also call it engineer placement, or hiring a dedicated AI developer. It is not recruiting, and there is no pool of contractors behind it: the engineer comes from our own senior team. If you would rather HorizonLux owned an agreed result end to end, the managed project on our Hire an AI engineer page is the better fit.

What a dedicated AI developer takes off your backlog
Point the engineer at the part of your backlog that keeps slipping. These are the kinds of work our senior team already does.
AI features inside your product
Vision, text and chat features on OpenAI and Claude models, wired into the app you already run. Built with the controls your team needs before it trusts what the AI writes.
- Model calls behind your own API
- Prompt settings your team can change
- Audit logs of what the AI did
AI agents and automations
Agents that act inside your tools and hand work back to a person where it matters. In RepairCheck, auto-estimates stop when an expert claims the case. Our AI agents page shows how we build them.
- Copilots that write to your records
- n8n flows between your systems
- Booking and messaging flows
The product around the AI
An AI feature is only useful inside a working product. Your engineer can also take the dashboard, API and mobile tickets it depends on, so the plain work moves too.
- Next.js and React dashboards
- NestJS APIs on Postgres and Prisma
- React Native and Expo apps
AI running costs
A feature that works in the demo can still cost too much with real users. Your engineer picks the model per task, caches prompts and tracks token spend. Our guide to LLM cost optimization lays out the method.
- The right model for each task
- Prompt caching where it pays
- Token spend tracked per feature
Claude Code, Cursor and Codex are daily tools on our team. Your engineer brings that practice into your repo, within your rules for review, CI and AI tools. How we build with coding agents is on our Software factory page.

The work opens with one agreed deliverable from your backlog. If it lands, carry on. If not, you stop and keep what was built.
You get · A go or stop decision, with the code in your repo
- 05
On your backlog
The engineer takes work from your board for the length you agreed, with a written update every week on what shipped, what is next and what is blocked.
You get · Merged code and docs in your repo
Step one costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
One engineer you could meet, and what their team shipped
We have no published staff augmentation case study yet, so here is the closest real evidence: a senior engineer you could meet, and two product builds by the team they come from. The paid pilot is where you see how the work goes in your own repo.

…how much ownership he takes: he thinks a feature through, raises edge cases before they turn into bugs, and delivers something that actually works… Exceptional clear and consistent communication.
Who directs, who employs, who owns, and how you stop
The question to ask any vendor is what happens when it ends. Here is our answer, line by line, written into the contract before day one.
If a freelancer has burned you before, you know the pattern: replies slow down, then stop, and the code sits in an account you can't reach. The list on the right settles who holds what, and how it ends, before any work starts.
One condition: someone on your side sets priorities and reviews the code. If nobody can yet, look at the managed project in the comparison below instead.
Your lead directs. HorizonLux employs.
Tickets come from your board and priorities from your lead. Your contract is with a company, not one person, and we don't recruit onto your payroll.
Code, IP and access: yours
Branches, history and docs sit in your repo from day one. You grant access to what the work needs and remove it when you choose. NDA on request.
Billing: set before any work
Billed CONFIRM: billing unit at the price agreed on the free call. The pilot is priced separately, so you judge the work before the full term starts.
Exit: after the pilot, or on notice
If the pilot doesn't land, stop and keep what was built. Later, give CONFIRM: notice length notice and get a handover with docs, runbooks and training.
If the engineer leaves or is ill
CONFIRM: replacement terms, and how fast a new engineer joins. Their commits, docs and notes are already in your repo, so the next engineer starts from them, not from zero.
Keep the AI engineer search open. Ship in the meantime.
Hiring takes time for any role. We found no trusted figure for AI engineers alone, so we don't quote one. Keep your search open, and let our engineer carry the backlog until your hire starts.

AI staff augmentation vs managed services, hiring and freelancers
Four ways to add senior AI engineering, and two of them are ours. Choose by who should direct the work and how long you need it.
| What matters | AI staff augmentation (HorizonLux) | Managed project (Hire an AI engineer) | Hiring in-house | Freelancer or marketplace |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who directs the work | Your lead, on your backlog | HorizonLux, toward an agreed result | Your lead | You, task by task |
| Who employs the engineer | HorizonLux | HorizonLux | You | They are self-employed |
| Time to start | Within five working days of the call | Within five working days of the call | About 1.5 months median to an accepted offer (SHRM, 2025), then notice | As fast as you can find and vet someone |
| Term and exit | The length you agree. Stop after the paid pilot, or later on agreed notice | As long as the result needs. Stop after the paid pilot | Permanent. Notice period and employment law | Per task or per hour. Whatever the contract says |
| Where the code lives | Your repo from day one, with a handover when it ends | Your repo from day one, with a handover at the end | Your repo | Depends on the person and the contract |
| If the engineer leaves | Replacement terms in the contract before day one | Agreed on the call, before the pilot starts | You restart the search | The work waits until you find someone new |
| Fits when | You have a backlog and a lead, and need senior hands now | You want one result and would rather not manage anyone | The role is core for years and the date can wait | The task is small and you can check it yourself |
SHRM's figure is the 2025 median across all roles, not AI roles alone. Freelancers can be excellent; the risks in the last column come from the setup, not the person. Market columns describe common patterns, not any named company.
Questions about AI staff augmentation
Answers to what CTOs ask before they let anyone into their repo.
What is the difference between staff augmentation and managed services?
The difference is who directs the work, and HorizonLux offers both models. In staff augmentation, the provider employs the engineer and your lead decides what gets built. In managed services, the provider directs the work inside an agreed scope and delivers a result. This page is staff augmentation. The managed route is on our Hire an AI engineer page: a paid pilot on one agreed deliverable, a weekly demo, then a handover with docs, runbooks and training.
Is AI staff augmentation outsourcing?
On paper, yes: your contract is with HorizonLux, which employs the engineer. In practice, nothing is handed off to a separate team. Your lead directs the day-to-day work, the engineer joins your stand-ups and code review, and every commit lands in your repo. That is the line between staff augmentation and outsourcing a whole project, where the provider decides how the work gets done.
How fast can a dedicated AI developer join our team?
A HorizonLux engineer joins your Slack and repo within five working days of the free call. There is no job ad, shortlist or notice period, because the engineer already works on our senior team. In those days we match someone to your stack and your hours, you meet them, and access to your Slack, repo and board is set up. A good week one: a codebase walkthrough, then an opening pull request on the pilot deliverable, through your review.
How much does AI staff augmentation cost?
HorizonLux agrees the price on the free call, before any work starts, and doesn't publish rates. It is scoped on how long you need the engineer and what they will work on, and billed CONFIRM: billing unit. The paid pilot is priced on its own, so your opening commitment is one deliverable, not a long contract. You get the price, the billing basis and the length in writing before the engineer joins.
Who owns the code, and what access does the engineer get?
You own the code, the IP and the docs, and HorizonLux keeps all of it in your repo from day one. We sign an NDA on request. The engineer gets access only to the repos and tools the work needs, in accounts you control, so you grant that access and remove it when you choose. Commits go to your repo, not a personal account or a side repo. AI coding tools are used only where your policy allows.
What if the engineer leaves, is ill or isn't the right fit?
HorizonLux lets you stop after the paid pilot if the work doesn't land, and you keep what was built. After that, notice and replacement terms are written into the contract before the engineer starts, so you know in advance what happens if they leave, fall ill or stop fitting the work. The code, history and docs are already in your repo, so whoever picks the work up next starts from there. We don't promise outcomes; we make the exit plain.
Can we hire the engineer permanently?
Not through this service: HorizonLux employs the engineer for the whole engagement and doesn't recruit onto clients' payrolls. What we do is work alongside your own search. The engineer ships while you hire, then hands over to your new hire with docs, runbooks and training, so the new person starts from working code and written notes, not a blank page.
Can your remote AI engineers build AI agents in our stack?
Yes, when your stack overlaps with HorizonLux's. Our engineers build AI features and agents on OpenAI and Claude models, and the product around them with React, Next.js, React Native and Expo, NestJS, Postgres, Prisma, Redis and AWS S3. They use Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, n8n and Supabase daily, and work remotely in English, in any timezone. If your stack is outside this list, Seif says so on the call.

We worked with Seif on the React Native app for our vehicle-appraisal platform. What stood out most was how much ownership he takes: he thinks a feature through, raises edge cases before they turn into bugs, and delivers something that actually works. And then there is one more thing why I wanted to work with Seif after our very first call: Exceptional clear and consistent communication. It is a pleasure to work with him and his team!
